Calgary Ostomy Society – 2025 AGM Recap

The Calgary Ostomy Society held its 2025 AGM this fall, celebrating community, volunteer dedication, and upcoming events that continue to strengthen local ostomy support.

The Calgary Ostomy Society gathered on September 23, 2025, for its Annual General Meeting. President Pat Cimmeck welcomed everyone and opened the meeting at 7:00 PM, confirming quorum and reviewing last year’s minutes, which were accepted without changes.

Members reflected on another productive and supportive year. Donations to Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Canada continued, helping provide supplies to people in need across the globe. The Christmas Social and fundraising auction were both successful, and regular support meetings carried on throughout the year. The search for a more affordable meeting venue and a smoother banking setup is still underway.

Treasurer Tiffany Shorson shared that the society’s finances remain healthy. The largest annual contribution continues to be the donation to the Ostomy Youth Camp, while costs have dropped thanks to the shift to digital newsletters. Priscilla Squibb and Gerald Sheen volunteered as auditors for 2025, and Tiffany was officially appointed Treasurer for a one-year term.

Members also discussed upcoming events. Step Up for Ostomy will take place on October 4, 2024, at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary as a casual awareness walk. The Christmas Social returns December 6, 2024, at the Kirby Centre, with ticket sales starting in October. Plans are also in motion for a Vendor Fair in November 2024.

Oct 4 – Lisa Gausman was presented with an award at the Step Up walk by Leanne Whyte, Ostomy Canada board member, in recognition of 19 years of service as Ostomy Youth Camp Administrator.

A heartfelt moment came as members recognized Lisa Gausman’s retirement after 19 incredible years leading the Ostomy Youth Camp. This year’s camp hosted 34 participants and saw a rise in volunteer involvement. Calgary Ostomy Society proudly sponsored six youth, and Lisa’s successor is already being supported in the transition.

When I first volunteered for Ostomy canada Youth Camp in 2006, it was, at least in part, for selfish reasons. At that time, I had been living with my ostomy for more than a decade, but I managed it quietly. I didn’t talk about it, and I certainly didn’t advocate for it. In 2006, I decided that I needed to be around others living well with their ostomy so I went out to camp, but what I received from the kids at camp and from fellow volunteers was far more than I ever gave. Very quickly, I realized my beginning wasn’t selfish at all, it was the start of finding my passion. My lived experience became something I not only wanted, but needed, to share.

The volunteer visitor program continues to make a meaningful impact, with 32 visits this year and new online training making it easier for volunteers to get started. Monthly support groups and the Osto-Meet gatherings remain active and well-attended, providing connection and encouragement for those living with an ostomy.

The meeting wrapped up at 8:15 PM with thanks to all members and volunteers for their ongoing dedication and enthusiasm. We look forward to another year of connection, advocacy, and support in Calgary!
